FRANKFORT, Ky. – Kentucky State held off Allen for a 23-20 win on Saturday, as quarterback
Denim Johnson threw for 213 yards and three touchdowns, all to
Jaden Hale, while the defense recorded two interceptions to secure the victory.
Johnson led the Thorobreds as the sophomore threw for 213 yards on 20-of-27 passing to go along with three touchdowns. He connected with Hale seven times for a total of 57 yards and a season high of three touchdowns. Another favorite was
Roscoe Parrish Jr. who had a season high of 83 receiving yards on six receptions.
On the defensive side, the Thorobreds racked up two interceptions that included a 44-yard interception from
Tray Blackmon Jr. and one interception from
Navy Curry.
Kendrick Curry led the green and gold with seven solo tackles and a total of nine tackles.
The Thorobreds turned a nine play, 60-yard drive into their first points of the game as Johnson found Hale on a nine-yard pass at 9:12 in the first quarter.
Allen tied the game 7-7 on a four-yard rush by Fabian Duncan with 2:54 left in the first quarter.
At the top of the second quarter (13:45) Johnson connected Hale for a 12-yard touchdown pass converting an eight play, 66-yard drive into a 14-7 Kentucky State lead.
Sam Herman of Allen made a 37-yard field goal at 8:18 in the second quarter and added another field goal of 43-yards close on the 14-13 Kentucky State advantage with 2:41 remaining in the quarter.
Nearly finding their way into the end zone the Thorobreds were forced into a 20-yard made field goal from
Landon Grover to go into halftime with a 17-13 lead over the Yellow Jackets at halftime.
Kentucky State had the lone score of the third quarter (12:11) on 24-yard touchdown pass from Johnson to Hale, but a failed extra point by Grover only added six points.
With 5:08 remaining in the fourth quarter, Daniel Plummer connected with Nanders Lawrence for a 29-yard passing touchdown and come within three of the 23-20 Kentucky State lead.
The Thorobreds were able to fend off the Yellow Jackets in the remaining minutes of the fourth quarter to win the game 23-20.
Kentucky State will have a bye week before heading to rival Central State on Saturday, Nov, 9
th at 1 p.m. in Wilberforce, Ohio.
