TUSKEGEE, Ala. — Denim Johnson threw for a career high of 361 yards, with one passing touchdown as the Kentucky State University football team earns a season high of 465 total offensive yards but fell short 38-24 to Tuskegee University in a Southwest Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC) game Saturday in Tuskegee, Alabama.
Tuskegee (4-3, 4-1 SIAC) took the opening kickoff, going 90 yards in three plays as Raequan Beal connect with Quavo Beckford on a 63-yard pass to take an early 7-0 lead with 14:12 remaining in the first quarter.
The Thorobreds (2-6, 2-4 SIAC) responded with a three play drive of 68 yards that ended with Johnson finding Tyler Bercy on 23-yard touchdown pass to tie the game 7-7 at 8:24 in the first quarter.
Near the end of the first quarter, Tuskegee scored on a 23-yard pass from Beal to Beckford at 4:19 and Kaquan Kimber recovered a fumble and returned it for 93-yards to extend the Golden Tigers to a 21-7 with 47 seconds left in the first quarter.
Kentucky State converted a nine play, 64-yard drive into a touchdown on a one yard rush by Cedric Ward to close on the 21-14 Tuskegee lead 10:28 in the second quarter.
Lorcan Ryans of Tuskegee added three points on a 43-yard field goal. Kentucky State's
Landon Grover responded with a 34-yard field goal at 2:53 in the second quarter to go into halftime trailing the Golden Tigers 24-17.
In the third quarter Tuskegee's Ren Spivey Jr. turned a nine yard rush into a touchdown to give his team a 31-17 lead with 8:13 remaining in the third quarter.
Tuskegee turned an 11 play drive of 99 yards into a touchdown on a one-yard rush by Chase Sellers at 9:50 in the fourth quarter.
The final points of the contest came at 2:03 in the fourth quarter as Kentucky State's Jaun Gainous found
Kale Anderson for a 27-yard passing touchdown. The Thorobreds would be unable to add another score and fall to the Golden Tigers 38-24.
