FRANKFORT, Ky. – Despite outscoring the Albany State Golden Rams in the fourth quarter 14-6 the Kentucky State Thorobreds would fall 27-33 Saturday afternoon in Alumni Stadium.
The Thorobreds led the contest with 207 rushing yards and 225 passing yards that led to 432 total offensive yards. The strong offensive performance consumed 34:47 of game play with 11:32 minutes of possession in the second quarter alone.
True Freshman
Denim Johnson led the way for the Thorobreds as he completed 17 passes on 23 attempts for a total of 206 passings yards including one touchdown. He led his team with 88 rushing yards after a huge 77-yard rush into the endzone in the fourth quarter.
HOW IT HAPPENED
At 12:27 in the first quarter, Albany State scored a touchdown when Isaiah Knowles connected with Javion Jackson on a 41-yard pass. Eli Mashburn successfully kicked the extra point to take an early 7-0 lead.
The Golden Rams extended their lead to 13-0 at 11:49 in the first quarter, when Jalen Pugh recovered a fumble and ran it in for a 23-yard touchdown. Gilbert Brown intercepted the subsequent pass intended for the two-point conversion.
Kentucky State got on the scoreboard at 07:09 in the first quarter with a 23-yard field goal by Molique. The score was 13-3, still in favor of ASU.
At 02:28, Albany State increased their lead to 20-3 with a 9-yard touchdown pass from Isaiah Knowles to Ralph Lovett. Eli Mashburn's extra point was successful.
In the 2nd quarter, the Thorobreds made it 20-10 at 11:23 with a 5-yard rushing touchdown by
Navy Curry, followed by Molique's successful extra point kick. Albany State responded at 07:55 with a 35-yard touchdown pass from Isaiah Knowles to Javion Jackson. Eli Mashburn's extra point was good, making the score 27-10.
The Thorobreds closed the gap to 27-13 with a 24-yard field goal by Molique at 00:37.
Albany State extended their lead further to 33-13 at 02:46 in the third quarter with a 17-yard touchdown pass from Knowles to William McDonald. The two-point conversion attempt failed with Malik Pierce rushing the ball.
Kentucky State continued their comeback effort in the 4th quarter at 10:56 with a 15-yard touchdown pass from Johnson to
Markel Cotton. Molique's extra point was successful, and the score stood at 33-20. At 08:13, KSUFB narrowed the gap to 33-27 with a 77-yard touchdown run by
Denim Johnson, followed by Molique's successful extra point kick.
