ALLENDALE, Mich. – Kentucky State football falls to #4 Grand Valley State 65-7 Saturday evening in Allendale, Michigan.
Positive Takeaways
On special teams Jadon Green had a strong performance punting for 304 yards on seven attempts for an average of 43.4 yards per punt.
Christian Perez completed 20 of his 29 attempts for 176 yards that included one touchdown.
Markel Cotton led both teams with 79 receiving yards on six receptions that included a touchdown on a 23-yard reception.
On defense
Dontavius Broadnax and
Jaylen Johnson led the contest with 11 tackles each. Broadnax tallied four solo tackles and seven assisted tackles that included 1.5 tackles for a loss of seven yards. Johnson earned three solo tackles and 8 assisted tackles that included one sack, 1.5 tackles for a loss of three yards and one forced fumble.
How It Happened
An early interception by Grand Valley State turned into to a quick seven for the Lakers giving them a 7-0 lead in the first quarter (11:44). The Lakers added seven on a 47-yard pass at 4:46 left in the first quarter. In the final moments of the first quarter the Lakers added seven to lead 21-0.
In the opening drive
Christian Perez was sacked in the endzone for a safety to add two for the Lakers in the second quarter. Grand Valley State completed a short pass into the endzone to an offensive lineman to add seven points at 12:28 in the second quarter. The Lakers connected on a 36-yard pass into the endzone to add seven points.
Jaylen Johnson forced a fumble on sack that was recovered by
Jeremiah Owens in the second quarter (4:21). Perez connected with
Markel Cotton on an 11-yard pass to score the first points for the Thorobreds at 2:16 in the second quarter.
Grand Valley State returned a blocked field goal to take a 44-7 lead at the half.
The Lakers added seven on a short run near the end of the third quarter (3:29).
Offensive success continued into the fourth quarter as the Lakers completed a 23-yard pass to extend their 58-7 at 8:42. Another seven was added on a rushing touchdown securing a 65-7 victory.
