FRANKFORT, Ky. – A new era of Kentucky State football has begun under the direction of Head Coach Felton Huggins Jr. as he begins to instill his team values of Grit, Attitude, and Preparation.
Everyone has brought the energy early in preseason camp, from the student-athletes to the coaching staff. Key returner Bryce Boby Hayes said following Thursday afternoon practice, "It feels good to be back and see everyone's faces again. We are ready to work, and the whole team is hungry." Head Coach Huggins followed those sentiments, "It has been a blessing to get out there on the field as we go out there and give it our all. I am proud of the effort our student-athletes and coaching staff have given this far." Huggins said following Thursday's practice.
Huggins joined the team as both participated in an accountability drill during warm-ups. "We did a standard and accountability drill. We don't do things as punishment. I don't believe in punishing the student-athletes. I believe that there is a way that we conduct ourselves as young men on and off the field, and so for us, everything we do, we do from a competition standpoint. This is a way for us to set the standard and attack the day and every opportunity we have when we step out on the field." Huggins said.
There was no walking on the field, and the Thorobreds were encouraging and motivating each other during different practice periods. "We step on the field with a purpose because everything we do is with a purpose and for the team's betterment. We don't compromise on the F.A.M.I.L.Y. (Forgetting About Me I Love You) values." Huggins said.
The Thorobreds will begin their 2023 season at home as they host Clark Atlanta for the 2023 SIAC Labor Day Kickoff on Aug. 31 at 7 p.m. inside Alumni Stadium in Frankfort, Kentucky. Tickets can be purchased by visiting
