ALBANY, Ga. – Mondrea Williams shot 90% from the field leading to a season high of 20 points and 11 rebounds to help the Thorobreds pick up a 72-63 road win at Albany State.
Along with Williams three more Thorobreds followed with scoring in the double figures,
Gracen Kerr (14),
Hilani Cantone (13) and
Taleah Dilworth (11).
Cantone delivered a standout performance, achieving season highs in three key categories: grabbing eight rebounds, making seven steals, and dishing out five assists.
Albany State took an early lead, shooting 9-of-15 from the field. However, the Thorobreds quickly responded with a 7-0 run, highlighted by a made layup from
Hilani Cantone. This surge closed the gap, ending the quarter with the Golden Rams holding a slim 21-18 lead.
The Thorobreds held the Golden Rams scoreless from 2:19 until the conclusion of the second quarter. Notably, two Thorobreds,
Mondrea Williams (4-of-4) and Cantone (3-of-3), maintained a flawless shooting record in the first half. Despite their performance, Kentucky State found themselves trailing Albany State 34-37 by the end of the second quarter.
Williams' swift bucket and a pair of successful free throws by
Taleah Dilworth briefly propelled the Thorobreds to a 38-37 lead. Albany State answered with a three-pointer at 8:04 in the third quarter swiftly snatched back the lead, making it 39-38. Williams continued to fight in the paint making a layup to give the Thorobreds their second lead of the quarter.
After
Aiseosa Woghiren confidently converted both of her free-throw attempts alongside two points from both Williams and Kerr, propelling the Thorobreds to a 50-45 lead at the end of the third quarter.
Seven points in the fourth quarter from Cantone led to a 16-0 Kentucky State run and an overall 26-5 run from 3:33 in the third to 5:05 in the fourth. The massive run led to a 68-50 Kentucky State with 4:45 remaining in regulation.
The Golden Rams would make a last chance effort to take back the lead with a 12-2 late fourth quarter. Albany State's run would not be enough as the Thorobreds would defeat the Golden Rams 72-63.
Kentucky State women's basketball will enter the holiday break 9-1 on the season and 6-0 in SIAC play.
