Women’s Basketball Displays Cohesion in Thrilling 82-75 Win at Savannah State

SAVANNAH, Ga. –  A career high night of 20 rebounds from Erica Jones combined with 28 points, seven assists and two steals, secure a 82-75 conference victory at Savannah State.  

In her first SIAC matchup head coach Amani Williams secured a victory to move her team to 3-1 on the season and 1-0 in conference play.  

Kerr continued to standout has she went 9-of-19 from the field, 6-of-6 from the charity stripe to score 28 points. She also led the Thorobreds with seven assists and two steals.  

Jones had a career high night of 20 rebounds along with adding 12 points to earn her first double-double of the season.  

 Savannah State would come to within one point (18-19) in the first quarter (2:13) that would be followed by eight points from Kerr leading to an 11-4 Kentucky State run to end the quarter with a 27-19 Thorobred lead.  

A jumper from the Tigers tied the game 27-27 in the second quarter (7:30) with Aniyah Jenkins answering with a jumper to retake the lead. Savannah State would hit a jumper to tie the game back at 29-29 (6:52).  

Halfway through the second the Thorobreds went on a 10-2, 3:31 scoring run that gave Kentucky State a 42-34 at 1:43 in the second quarter. A foul by Erica Jones brought the Tigers to within five of the 44-39 halftime lead.  

Jones opened the third quarter with a lay-up and grabbed the defensive rebound allowing Kerr to score and extend the Kentucky State lead 48-39 (9:07). A lay-up by the Tigers closed on the 62-60 Kentucky State lead at the end of the third quarter.  

Jones grabbed a defensive rebound (9) to earn a career high of 20 rebounds at 6:43 in the fourth.  

The Kentucky State defense kept Savannah State scoreless for 2:39 in the fourth to com out on top with an 82-75 victory.  

Women's basketball will continue their road trip on Monday, November 27 at Edward Waters, the game time for this contest will soon be announced.
