Dominant Third Quarter Secures Victory in Battle of Kentucky HBCUs

FRANKFORT, Ky. –  A 21-4 run along with keeping Simmons to just six points in the third quarter led to a 74-48 Kentucky State women's basketball win during the Battle of Kentucky HBCUs.
 
Throughout the afternoon the Thorobreds performed as unit, "I have 15 girls and every one of them can hoop, one through fifteen and I tell them every night step up because you never know when your number is going to be called and when we need you. I love each of them and believe in all of them." Head coach Amani Williams said following the game.
 
Taleah Dilworth showcased flawless accuracy at the charity stripe, going 4-for-4, and demonstrated efficiency from the field with a 6-of-11 performance, earning her the game-high of 16 points.
 
Gracen Kerr left an indelible mark on the stat sheet, leading the Thorobreds with six assists and five steals, all while contributing 15 points to the team's score. Meanwhile, Mondrea Williams asserted dominance on the boards, securing ten rebounds and making two crucial blocks.
 
How It Happened
In the opening minutes, Mondrea Williams connected with Nya Caruthers at the three-point line, leveling the score at 4-4 with 6:44 on the clock in the first quarter.
 
The Thorobreds collectively held the Falcons scoreless for over four minutes, sparking a 7-0 run by the 3:22 mark in the first quarter.
 
Despite Simmons' efforts, Kentucky State managed to maintain control, finishing the first quarter with a 15-13 lead.
 
Finding their rhythm, the Thorobreds embarked on an 8-0 run, highlighted by four points from Taleah Diloworth. By halftime, Kentucky State led 29-24.
 
A comprehensive team effort propelled the Thorobreds through a dominant 21-4 run, establishing a commanding 50-30 lead by the conclusion of the third quarter.
 
Building on their momentum, Kentucky State continued to gel as a team. A 9-2 surge in the latter half of the third quarter, at the 3:24 mark, extended the Thorobreds' advantage to 70-41. Ultimately, they secured a convincing 74-48 victory.
 
A Look Ahead
The Thorobreds will meet non-conference opponent West Liberty on Wednesday, Nov. 15 at 5:30 p.m. in West Liberty, West Virginia.
