ST. THOMAS, U.S. Virgin Islands – After a strong second-half performance shooting 62.5% from the field and double-digit scoring from
Montrell Jacobs and
Tyson Brooks, the Clinton College Golden Bears managed to hold off the Thorobreds and win the contest 98-91 in the final game of the YES U.S. Virgin Islands Classic.
In the first half, both teams nearly matched each other from the field, with the Golden Bears making 15 (46.9%) shots from the field and the Thorobreds making 12 (42.9%).
Clinton received a lot of charity in the first half, making 17 of 27 attempts at the charity stripe. The Golden Bears led the Thorobreds 51-38 at the end of the first half.
As a team, Kentucky State fought hard in the second half shooting 62.5% (20-of-32) from the field, led by Jacobs with 15 and Brooks with 11. On the defensive end, they forced 13 turnovers and were able to capitalize with 12 points.
Kentucky State came to within four (95-91) on a second-chance layup by Brooks with just 23 seconds left in the second half. The Golden Bears would manage to hold off the Thorobreds and win the contest 98-91.
Jacobs led the Thorobreds with 18 points, and his teammates followed with 16 from Brooks, 12 from
Elijiah Lockhart, and ten from
Jay Murrell. As a team, the Thorobreds led the contest with 38 rebounds. The effort was led by eight from Murrell alongside both
Kong Kong and Brooks who tallied seven each.
The Thorobreds will return stateside and head to Atlanta, Georgia, where they will continue SIAC play at Clark Atlanta on Wednesday, January 4. The game is scheduled to begin at 7:30 p.m.
