Box Score Frankfort Ky. – Kentucky State University, men's basketball, fell short in a triple-overtime loss to conference opponent LeMoyne-Owen College.
Montrell Jacobs led the Thorobreds in scoring with a season-high 34 points in the loss. KSU hit a season-high 19 threes in the contest.
Three was the word of the day for the Thorobreds as they started the game on fire from the arc. 7 threes in the first half, with
Kong Kong hitting 3 in a row himself. LeMoyne-Owen kept in the game, trading twos for KSU's threes.
KSU would extend the lead to 12 before giving up a three to end the half. Kentucky State ended the first half leading 48-39.
The second half began with more of the same as
Montrell Jacobs hit three triples to extend the lead to 14 at 59-45 with 17:26 left in the second half.
Kentucky State controlled the game throughout, leading by 11 with 2:20 remaining in the game. Multiple turnovers by the Thorobreds allowed LeMoyne-Owen to close the gap and hit a bank three to extend the game to the first overtime in the final seconds.
In the first overtime, both teams had opportunities in the final seconds to win the game but came up short with KSU turning the ball over in the paint, and LeMoyne-Owen's shot hit nothing but backboard as time expired at 106 even.
In the second overtime, foul trouble started to catch up to the Thorobreds as starting forward
Jalon Andrews fouled out with 3:40 left, and forward
Tyson Brooks picked up his third and fourth foul in the period. Free throws determined this period as Jacobs hit two free throws with 1.1 seconds remaining. The second overtime period ended at 119 even.
Kentucky State ran out of steam in the final overtime period as they could not put enough stops together. The fouls continued to pile up as
Tyson Brooks, and
Kong Kong fouled out of the game. LeMoyne-Owen would push their lead to 6 before Jacobs hit a three with no time remaining to close out the contest. Three overtimes were not enough as the Kentucky State falls 129-132.
