FRANKFORT, Ky. - The Kentucky State women's basketball team (4-3, 2-2 SIAC) defeated Simmons College (5-8) 61-53 on Saturday (Dec. 10) as they returned to William Exum Center in Frankfort, Ky.
Hilani Cantone led the contest scoring 20 points, followed by
Gracen Kerr with 15 and
Laurie Thomas with ten, all scoring in the double digits.
Cantone led the Thorobreds with four steals and Kerr and Thomas tallied three apiece. Kerr and Thomas both lead the Thorobreds with four assists each.
Jasmine Elder and
Nina Blade both lead with seven rebounds each.
How it Happened
Kentucky State scored the contest's first points with a jumper from Kerr. Simmons College Amauni Sanders responded with a layup from her offensive rebound, making the score 2-2 in the early moments of the first quarter.
The first quarter would close 16-4 on a turnaround jump shot by
Laurie Thomas,
At the half, the Thorobreds would lead with a score of 32-20. Opening the third quarter,
Hilani Cantone kept the momentum going with a deep-range three-pointer (35-22).
The Falcons got into foul trouble giving up two points from Fenelon and Kerr from the charity stripe. Pushing the Thorobreds lead to 39-22 with 7 minutes and 43 seconds left in the third quarter. Kerr's hand remained hot with two back to back three pointers ending the third.
The Falcons attempted to make a comeback as they closed the lead to 10 points with 3 minutes remaining in the fourth.
Thorobreds would finish the game with a turnover steal by Kerr, who assisted Cantone's layup. Kerr would put the final points on the board for the Thorobreds, who would go into win 51-67.
