The Kentucky State University baseball team split a non-conference doubleheader with Salem Sunday, but still managed to claim the three-game series between the two teams.
Kentucky State (8-3) had its seven-game winning streak snapped with a loss in the nightcap. The Thorobreds return to action 10 a.m. Saturday, hosting Northwood and Urbana.
GAME ONE: KENTUCKY STATE 13, SALEM 4
Sophomore
Solomon Reed (Cincinnati, Ohio) tied a career-high with 12 strikeouts to earn his first win of the season as Kentucky State won the opener 13-4.
THE MOMENT THAT MATTERED
In a 2-0 game, with runners on second and third, Reed struck out back-to-back batters to preserve the lead. Reed (1-1), after cruising through five scoreless innings, allowed four earned runs on five hits with five walks.
INDIVIDUAL LEADERS
- Senior Kevin Givhan (Chicago, Ill.) went 4-for-4 with two doubles, two runs scored and three RBI.
- Senior Chance Egnor (Shepherdville, Ky.) smacked a bomb off into the football stadium concourse and went 2-for-2 with a career-best three runs scored and three RBI.
- Freshman Kelton Saylor (Rossville, Ind.) was 2-for-5 with his first career homer and two RBI.
- Junior Dom Lawson (Bloomfield, Ky.) also had two hits for the Thorobreds.
BRED BITS
- Nine of the 10 players that stepped to the plate scored at least one run in the victory.
- Dating back to last season, Kentucky State has won 17 of its last 22 with winning streaks of nine games and seven games.
- Junior Byron Famble (Cincinnati, Ohio) walked six times in nine plate appearances during the four-game weekend series.
GAME TWO: SALEM 8, KENTUCKY STATE 5
A pitcher's duel for five innings turned into an offensive explosion as the Kentucky State University baseball team fell to Salem, 8-5.
THE MOMENT THAT MATTERED
The tying run came to the plate with one out in the bottom of the seventh inning, but a strikeout and pop out brought the threat to an end.
INDIVIDUAL LEADERS
- Sophomore Trey Walker (Farmington Hills, Mich.) tallied two of Kentucky State's three hits.
- Lawson, 0-1, was fabulous on the mound. He allowed three runs, two earned, on just two hits in five innings of work. He struck out eight with two walks.
- Saylor had a two-run double in the seventh inning.
BRED BITS
- Thirteen of the game's 14 runs were scored in the last two innings.
- Each of the four batters in the lineup scored a run.
- Kentucky State struck out 16 times.
