Box Score 2 HURRICANE, WV – The Kentucky State University softball team split a non-conference doubleheader with the University of Charleston Saturday.
GAME ONE: KENTUCKY STATE 6, CHARLESTON 1
Senior pitcher
Paola Flores (San Lorenzo, Puerto Rico) hurled a complete-game six-hitter as the Thorobreds opened the doubleheader with a victory. Flores (3-4) allowed just one earned run with two strikeouts in earning the victory.
Kentucky State took the lead with a three spot in the top of the second inning. Sophomore
Kailen Olison (Moreno Valley, CA) got the scoring underway with a two-run, two-out triple, scoring freshman
Olivia Saylor (Lancaster, KY) and freshman
Olivia Steward (Salem, IN). Then, Olison dented the plate on a
Natalia Bocanegra (Covina, CA) triple.
A two-run double by Saylor in the top of the third inning pushed the lead to 5-0, and KSU capped the scoring from third as Charleston recording a caught stealing at second.
Saylor and Olison had two RBI each, while Saylor, Bocanegra and sophomore
Moana Pinner (Hilo, HI) added two hits each as the Thorobreds tabulated 10 hits as a team.
GAME TWO: CHARLESTON 6, KENTUCKY STATE 5
A two-run double in the bottom of the fifth inning provided the winning runs as Kentucky State surrendered an early 5-0 lead in losing 6-5 in the nightcap.
Kentucky State took the early lead with three runs in the top of the first inning on RBI singles by senior
Jittaun Thompson (Pomona, CA) and Steward. RBI singles by Steward and junior
Katie Barter (Louisville, KY) pushed the advantage to 5-0 in the top of the third inning.
Charleston pulled to within a run with a four-run third inning, and then took the lead with the aforementioned fifth-inning double.
Flores (3-5) took the loss in relief, allowing two runs on three hits in three innings. Freshman
Katelyn Hurley (Elizabeth, IN) allowed four runs on six hits in three innings.
Steward finished with her second three-hit game of the season, going 3-for-4 with an RBI. Thompson recorded her second multi-hit game of the season, going 2-for-2 with two runs scored and an RBI, while senior
Jackie Zubiate (Riverside, CA) had her third multi-hit game of the year with a 2-for-4 game.
Kentucky State (5-8) travels to Louisville Tuesday for a non-conference doubleheader against Bellarmine.
