The Kentucky State University senior class accounted for all but nine points as the Thorobreds posted the 72-57 upset victory over West Division champions Miles Saturday in Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference action at the William Exum Center.
Seniors
Ditalion Battle (Cincinnati, OH),
Kevin Hayes (Detroit, MI),
David Jelks (Conyers, GA) and
Austin Sherrell (Detroit, MI) were honored in a pregame ceremony for their contributions to the Kentucky State University men's basketball program.
The Thorobreds shots 51.8 percent from the field in the first half to open up a 14-point halftime lead. Most of the damage came from the shooting stroke of Battle, who scored 19 of his 22 points in the first half. He was proficient in his first-half shooting ability, converting 7-of-9 from the field and 5-of-7 from beyond the arc.
As hot as Battle was in the first half, Hayes was in the second. He calmly took the scoring mantle for the next 20 minutes, scoring 17 of his game-high 23 in the second 20 minutes. Sherrell added 10 points and eight rebounds, while Jelks had eight points and a team-high 10 rebounds.
While the offense gets all the headlines and the glory, the game was won on the defensive end. Kentucky State held the Golden Bears to just 37.9 percent shooting and no Miles players reached double figures in the scoring column.
Kentucky State (12-13 overall, 10-7), which can finish no lower than fourth in the SIAC West, takes on Tuskegee 7:30 p.m. Monday in the regular season finale. The Thorobreds with a victory can finish as high as second.
