Kentucky State had trimmed its 10-point deficit to four point midway through the fourth quarter. But with starting point guard
Amani Williams (Scotch Plains, NJ) and leading scorer
Brooke Wallace (Oberlin, OH) on the bench with four fouls, the Marauders extended its lead to double figures, sealing the win.
After scoring the first five points of the game, the Thorobreds were outscored 20-5 to close the quarter. The deficit grew to as much 16 in the second quarter, but a buzzer beating layup by junior
Jessie Kee (Indianapolis, IN) cut the deficit back down to 10.
The lead hovered around double figures until an 8-0 spurt over the final 3:22 in the third quarter brought the Blacked Out crowd to its feet and had the deficit standing at just four. However, Kentucky State couldn't get over the hump to gain the lead, and eventually, the aforementioned run sunk any thoughts of a comeback.
The loss snaps a three-game winning streak for the Thorobreds.
Wallace finished with her 14th double-double of the season, scoring 12 points with 14 rebounds. Kee was the team's leading scorer with 13 points, while Williams finished with 11 points, five rebounds and four assists.
Kentucky State (13-11 overall, 6-9 SIAC) returns to the court 1 p.m. Saturday, hosting Miles in SIAC action. The Thorobreds will honor the contributions of seniors Wallace,
Vinsetta Covington and
Tara Jefferson in a pregame ceremony.
