ALBANY, Ga. – The Kentucky State University women's basketball team battled throughout the entire forty minutes, but ultimately, fell to Albany State Thursday, 70-69, in Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference action at the ASU West Campus Arena.
Trailing by five with four minutes remaining, KSU tightened up its defense, and following a three-pointer by senior
Carnethia Brown (Louisville, Ky.) – the Thorobreds claimed the 66-65 lead with 2:04 left. However, Albany State split a pair of free throws on back-to-back possessions to reclaim the lead.
A steal and conversion pushed the ASU lead to three points. Kentucky State missed a potential game-tying corner three with 10 seconds remaining, and another ASU free throw sealed the game. A late three-pointer by Brown accounted for the final score.
Brown finished with a game-high 24 points on 9-of-18 shooting with six rebounds. Senior
Victoria Blankenship (Fayetteville, N.C.) finished with 13 points and four rebounds, while sophomore
Deja Antoine (Tamarac, Fla.) and junior
Khaliah Herbert (Crete, Ill.) added 10 points each.
Junior
Erica Jones (South Haven, Miss.) pulled down a team-high 11 rebounds to go along with eight points.
Four of the five starters scored as Kentucky State raced out to a 12-2 lead, but the Golden Rams responded by ending the quarter by scoring 14 of the last 16 points. Back-to-back three-pointers to start the second quarter helped KSU regain the lead it held for most of the first quarter.
The lead grew to as much as eight before, just like the first quarter, ASU closed ferociously with a 10-2 run for a 32-all tie.
Kentucky State trailed by much of the third quarter with the deficit growing to as much as seven, but it was the Thorobreds that closed the quarter to pull to within two.
KSU (4-7 overall, 1-3 SIAC) will have off until hosting Fort Valley State 1 p.m. January 4.
