The Kentucky State University women's basketball lost a 19-point lead, and fell to Paine College Saturday, 63-60, in Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference action at the William Exum Center.
Paine scored 14 of the game's final 18 points to steal the victory.
The scoring run came on the heels of a three-pointer from junior
Khaliah Herbert (Crete, Ill.) that pushed Kentucky State's lead to seven with 5:07 remaining. Five turnovers over the next six possessions enabled the Lions to quickly claim the lead. However, Kentucky State answered as junior
Taylore Gotcher's (Garland, Texas) rebound and put back gave the 'Breds a one-point lead with 1:09 remaining. The visitors went 6-of-6 from the charity stripe to seal the win.
After withstanding a torrid shooting start from Paine, the host Thorobreds turned up the defensive pressure in the second quarter. Kentucky State held the visiting Lions to just three points in the second quarter, outscoring them 22-3, and took a 17-point lead in the break.
A 25-4 run to end the third quarter gave the Lions life, and they trailed by just six going into the final 10 minutes. That's where it hovered until the game-ending spurt that pushed the visitors to the win.
A trio of Thorobreds scored in double figures, led by junior
Erica Jones (South Haven, Miss.), who finished with 13 points and five rebounds, while Herbert connected on a season-high 12 points on 4-of-6 shooting.
Senior
Victoria Blankenship (Fayetteville, N.C.) added 10 points and a team-high six rebounds, while senior
Amani Williams (Scotch Plains, N.J.) finished with a team-high five assists.
Kentucky State (4-5 overall, 1-1 SIAC) return to action 5:30 p.m. Monday, hosting Benedict.
