MBB drops SIAC opener

SAVANNAH, Ga. – Ultimately, it came down to the free throw line as the Kentucky State University men's basketball team fell to Savannah State Saturday, 89-79, in Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference action at Tiger Arena.

Kentucky State shot just 37 percent (10-of-27) from the line and were outscored by 15 points from the charity stripe as the Tigers shot 25-of-33.

The first half was a back and forth affair, and after senior Grant Goode (Matawan, N.J.) drilled a three-pointer with 8:37 remaining – the game was tied. However, Savannah State scored seven straight to take a lead it wouldn't relinquish. The Kentucky State deficit was seven at the break.

The Thorobreds made a couple of attempts to get back into the game, but the inability to knock down free throws stymied any comeback attempts.

Senior Damarri Moore (Brooklyn, N.Y.) had his best game in a Kentucky State uniform with his first career double-double. He came off the bench for the first time this season with career highs in points (19) and rebounds (12).

After scoring just 11 points total in the first four games, freshman Jalen Fisher (Ypsilanti, Mich.) followed up his career-high 17-point performance Tuesday with 13 points against SSU. Junior Bradlee Lewis (Chicago, Ill.) added 11 points, while senior Shaq Athie (Cincinnati, Ohio) finished with 10 points and seven rebounds.

Kentucky State (2-5 overall, 0-1 SIAC) steps away from conference action 6 p.m. Friday, hosting Campbellsville University Harrodsburg.
