LEXINGTON, KY – Sometimes you run your offense to perfection, get the shot you want, and it just don't fall.
That was the case Friday in Kentucky State University's men's basketball loss to No. 2 Kentucky, 83-51, in exhibition action inside Rupp Arena.
"As you know, this was a make or miss game," said Kentucky State University men's basketball coach
Jamaal Jackson. "We missed a lot of shots. We didn't get to the spots we wanted to get to. We shot 28 percent from the 3-point line and 26 percent from the field. When you do that, you aren't going to give yourself much of a chance to win. I thought we played defense pretty well. We meant to keep the ball from the middle of the box and from the post. We forced a lot of contested jump shots. We did that well."
Senior guard
Grant Goode (Matawan, N.J.) and graduate guard
Shaq Athie (Cincinnati, Ohio) finished with 10 points each to lead the Thorobreds. Goode added a team-high eight rebounds, while senior guard
Damarri Moore (Brooklyn, N.Y.) and senior forward
Jordan Little (Jersey City, N.J.) pulled down five rebounds each.
Kentucky went on a 22-3 run late in the first half to push a six-point lead into a 25-point bulge, and it was 24 points going into half.
Senior
Orlando Fikes (Detroit, Mich.) capped a 12-0 run with back-to-back three-pointers to pull Kentucky State to within 17 points. However, the Thorobreds couldn't get any closer as UK scored 25 of the last 35 points.
"I talked to some of the guys in the locker room as well, just being able to see the fight in the guys that have no fear," said Fikes. "That's going to be great for this season, being able to compete in our conference. We're not going to play against teams at this level all the time, so being able to compete and play fearless, we're going to build on it."
Kentucky State travels to Bowling Green 7 p.m. Saturday for another exhibition game, playing Western Kentucky.
