AUGUSTA, GA – The Kentucky State University women's basketball team lost for the fifth time in six road games, falling to Paine College, 67-66, Wednesday in Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference action at the HEAL Center.
The Lions connected on 8-of-10 from the charity stripe in the final 1:22 to secure the victory. The 80 percent conversation rate was in stark contrast of the 43.7 percent shooting (7-of-16) for the first 38 minutes of the game.
Kentucky State raced out to a 10-point lead, 17-7, late in the first period, and maintained a lead for the entirety of the second quarter. However, the advantage was just three at halftime.
The Thorobreds led until Paine hit three straight three-pointers during an 11-2 spurt to build a game-high six point lead. But, a jumper by senior
Brooke Wallace (Oberlin, OH) gave KSU the one-point lead going into the final period.
There were six ties and five lead changes in the final 10 minutes before Paine iced the game at the free throw line.
Sophomore
Erica Jones (South Haven, MS) finished with 14 points, while junior
Jessie Kee (Indianapolis, IN) and Wallace added 11 points. Wallace pulled down five rebounds, and Kee added four boards.
Junior
Kiante Butts (Memphis, TN) pulled down a team-high 13 rebounds to go along with nine points.
Kentucky State (8-7 overall, 2-5 SIAC) stays on the road to play Tuskegee 1 p.m. January 12.
