@KYSUVB wraps up USI Invite play

EVANSVILLE, IN - The Kentucky State University volleyball team suffered a pair of straight-set losses Saturday as the Thorobrettes concluded play in the 2018 USI Invitational. KYSU opened play with a 25-16, 25-17, 25-19 loss to Edinboro, and then fell to Ohio Dominican, 25-18, 25-20, 25-20.

The Thorobrettes (0-4 overall) host a tri-match Tuesday with IU-Southeast and Concord for their home opener.  KYSU plays IU-Southeast at 1 p.m. and Concord at 5 p.m., while IU-Southeast and Concord will meet at 3 p.m.

EDINBORO RECAP
In the opening set, Edinboro took control by scoring 11 straight early points for a 18-7 lead in claiming the lead. Kentucky State went back and forth with its opponent in the second set, but Edinboro combined several multi-point runs to gradually pull away. Tied at 13 in the final set, the Fighting Scots once again pulled away slowly for the win.

Sophomore middle blocker Jalynn Roberts (Davenport, IA) led the team with six kills on 14 attacks. Freshman libero Alliyah Williams (Sugarland, TX) and freshman outside hitter Khirra Kenney (Indianapolis, IN) finished with 10 digs each.

Sophomore setter Amanda Moore (Caddo Mills, TX) distributed a team-high 11 assists.

OHIO DOMINICAN RECAP
In what has been the theme to the early portion of the season, Kentucky State played nip and tuck with an opponent for most of the match, but late runs proved its undoing. In the opening set, KYSU overcame an early 10-4 deficit to claim an one-point lead. However, the Panthers responded with eight of the next nine points, and 11 of the last 14 points for the victory.

With the second set tied at 14, broke the deadlock with three consecutive points and pulled away slowly for the win. Holding a 14-12 lead in the final set, the Thorobrettes had ODU score eight of the next 11 points to get on the brink of victory. Kentucky State would climb back to trail 21-20, but the Panthers scored the final four points.

Sophomore outside hitter Robin Poole (Katy, TX) finished with a team-high nine kills on 29 attempts and eight digs. Senior middle blocker Arlandria Greathouse (Crowley, TX) and Roberts contributed six kills each.

Sophomore setters Moore and Gabriella Gracia (Trullia Alto, Puerto Rico) combined for 27 assists with 15 and 12, respectively.
