COLUMBIA, SC – The Kentucky State University women's basketball had its five-game winning streak come to an end Monday with an 80-64 loss to Benedict College in Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference action.
Kentucky State committed seven turnovers, while shooting just 2-of-7 from the field and 1-of-4 from the line during Benedict's pivotal 20-5 second-quarter run. Eighteen of the Tigers' 20 points during the spurt came from either the free throw line or in the paint.
Another run, this one 13-2, to start the second half boosted the Kentucky State deficit to 16 points, and it would grow to as much as 19 in the third quarter.
However, the Thorobreds didn't go down without a fight.
KSU turned up the pressure offensively and defensively, going to the line 12 times – connecting nine time in the final 90 seconds to cut the deficit to 12 going into the final quarter. The deficit shrunk to as little as six points with a shade over seven minutes remaining.
But, the Thorobreds couldn't overcome the foul trouble that mounted throughout the game with three players eventually fouling out.
Sophomore
Erica Jones (South Haven, MS) finished with a team-high 18 points on 5-of-6 shooting, while junior
Jessie Kee (Indianapolis, IN) added 16 points.
Junior
Amani Williams (Scotch Plains, NJ) chipped in with 10 points and five assists.
Kentucky State (8-6 overall, 2-4 SIAC) travels to Paine College (0-10 overall, 0-4) 5:30 p.m. Wednesday in SIAC action.
