Three-point barrage stings Yellow Jackets

Box Score In the immediate aftermath of surrendering a double-digit lead, the Kentucky State University connected on three straight three-pointers to regain the momentum, and then closed out Cedarville from the free throw line in the 77-69 non-conference victory Tuesday at the William Exum Center. The Thorobreds played in front of more than 700 screaming Frankfort Independent School K-8 kids.

Senior sharpshooter Ditalion Battle (Cincinnati, OH), who came into the game with just one three-pointer, hit back-to-back deep three's and then redshirt junior Felix Wilson (Lexington, KY) drilled a corner three to turn an one-point deficit into an eight point lead – leading to a Yellow Jackets timeout with a little more than four minutes remaining. Kentucky State put the game away by going 13-of-16 from the foul line in the last two minutes.

Battle and senior Kevin Sherrell (Detroit, MI) combined for all 11 points during an 11-2 run early in the first half to give the Thorobreds some breathing room.
Cedarville pulled to within four midway through the half, but KSU pushed the lead to double figures with some transition baskets. Kentucky State took a nine-point lead into the half.

The Yellow Jackets made a couple of runs in the second half, however, Kentucky State was able to fend off the challenges to maintain its advantage. But, Cedarville had one last gasp in them by scoring eight of nine points to take the lead with 6:19 remaining.

However, the lead was short lived as the aforementioned barrage of three-pointer took the sting out of the Yellow Jackets.

Four players reached double figures with senior Kevin Hayes (Detroit, MI) leading the way with 23 points, four assists and three rebounds. Battle added a season-high 18 points with four rebounds and two assists. Sherrell finished with 12 points and seven rebounds, while Wilson dropped in a season-high 11 points.

Freshman Jah Bennett (Columbus, OH) played a season-high 19 minutes and contributed a career-high and team-leading eight rebounds before fouling out.

Kentucky State (2-2 overall) kicks off Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference action 3 p.m. Saturday, traveling to Fort Valley State University.
