Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

@KYSUWBB falls to UAH

Khaliah Herbert's corner three-point attempt hit the side of the rim, bounced up into the air, but fell harmlessly to the Lucias Mitchell Court, and the Kentucky State University women's basketball team experienced defeat for the first time in the young season. (Post Game Press Conference)

The University of Alabama at Huntsville scored 12 of the game's final 16 points to escape with the 59-58 win over KSU in non-conference action Monday at the William Exum Center.

Kentucky State had several chances down the stretch to pull out the victory, but they went 2-of-6 from the free throw line and turned the ball over on an inbounds with nine seconds remaining. In all, the Thorobreds were just 14-of-27 from the charity stripe for the game.

With nine seconds remaining, junior guard Amani Williams (Scotch Plains, NJ) drove to the basket and was awarded an intentional foul. After missing the first free throw, she made the second attempt to pull KSU to within one. However, the home team threw away the inbounds play.

The Chargers gave them life by missing a pair of free throws of their own, but the buzzer beating three-pointer didn't come to fruition.

KSU, for the fourth straight game, started out blazing. The Thorobreds scored 14 of the game's first 18 points and took a nine-point lead into the second quarter. They continued to play add-on as the advantage as the lead ballooned to as much as 18, and it was 18 with 3:44 remaining in the second quarter.

Huntsville started trimming into the KSU lead as they went to the free throw on four straight possessions, and five of nine possession down the stretch. When the smoke cleared, an 18-point lead was down to 11 at the break, and the Chargers had stolen some momentum.

By the end of the third quarter, UAH trimmed the lead down to six heading into the final period. In that final period Kentucky State managed just eight points. The Thorobreds shot 21 percent (6-of-28) from the field in the second half, and missed all seven of their three-point attempts.

Senior Brooke Wallace (Oberlin, OH) led the team with 13 points on 5-of-13 points with eight rebounds, while Williams finished with 10 points. Senior Tara Jefferson (Milwaukee, WI) pulled down a team-high 10 boards to go along with seven points.

Kentucky State (3-1) will be back in action 2 p.m. EST Wednesday, traveling to play the University of Missouri-St. Louis in non-conference action.
