Three in double figures in victory

Three players reached double figures as the Kentucky State University men's basketball team opened the home portion of its schedule with a 73-65 victory over Wilberforce Tuesday at the William Exum Center. (Post Game Press Conference)

Senior Kevin Hayes (Detroit, MI) led the way with 19 points and five rebounds, while senior Austin Sherrell (Detroit, MI) added 12 points, six rebounds, five blocks, five assists and three steals. Junior Grant Goode (Matawan, NJ) added 10 points and three rebounds.

Senior Ditalion Battle (Cincinnati, OH) finished with a team-high seven rebounds to go along with his seven points.

Kentucky State stout defensively, holding the Bulldogs to just six points over the first 11 minutes of the game as the Thorobreds opened up a 20-point lead. Eventually Wilberforce pulled to within 10 points, but the Thorobreds finished the half with 13 straight points.

KSU shot a robust 55.2 percent (16-of-29) from the field in the first half, while holding the Bulldogs to just 20.6 percent (7-of-34).

The second half saw the Thorobreds shoot just 46.2 percent (12-of-26), and Wilberforce was blazing from the floor over the last 20 minutes – shooting 53.8 percent (21-of-39).

Kentucky State (1-1) travels to Canton, OH to face Malone in a non-conference game 4 p.m. Saturday.
