A touchdown with three seconds remaining accounted for the winning score as the Kentucky State University football team dropped a heartbreaking loss to Miles College, 24-21, Saturday as part of Homecoming festivities at Alumni Stadium in Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference action.
The 17-yard scoring strike capped a seven-play, 78-yard drive over 58 seconds that stunned a home crowd still whipped in a frenzy from a Thorobreds go-ahead touchdown. A 41-yard reception on third down put the Golden Bears in the red zone with nine seconds remaining setting up the touchdown.
Kentucky State took its first lead of the game just 60 seconds earlier as sophomore quarterback
Jules St. Ge broke several tackles en route to a 39-yard touchdown run. It was the third touchdown that St. Ge had accounted for. Possibly the biggest play on the drive was an offensive pass interference that prevented a sure interception that would have halted the drive. It was a drive set up by a third-down stop and a short punt.
The Thorobreds drove the opening kick into the red zone, but the field goal attempt was blocked. Similarly, Miles first drive came to an end via turnover on downs as its fourth down run came up a yard short of paydirt.
Both teams scored on their first drives of the second quarter with Miles taking the lead, and KSU responding with a nine-yard pass from St. Ge to
Demetrius Anderson. The Golden Bears took the lead with a 37-yard field goal, and maintained the lead at halftime as a 39-yard Kentucky State field goal was missed as time expired.
A third quarter touchdown extended the Golden Bears to double figures, and they were a missed field goal from pushing its advantage to 13 points.
Kentucky State seemed to use momentum from the missed field goal as St. Ge capped a nine-play, 74-yard drive with a 21-yard scoring strike to senior
Paul Campbell. It was Campbell's first receiving touchdown after serving as the team's starting quarterback last season.
Needing a defensive stop, KSU got exactly that on a three-and-out with less than three minutes remaining. Senior
Chris Roberts, who was a handful all game long, had the last of his season-high 12 tackles to force the punt.
Roberts had seven solo and five assisted tackles with three of those stops coming for loss. Senior
Keonte Reynolds added 10 stops, including one for loss, and junior Myrthel Stewart finished with nine tackles.
St. Ge was 13-of-17 for 191 yards with two touchdowns, while adding 84 yards on 15 rushes and another score. Junior
Michael Nero had 52 yards on 11 carries.
Sophomore
Brendan Lawler hauled in five catches for 62 yards, both season-highs, and Anderson recorded four receptions for 61 yards.
Kentucky State (0-7 overall, 0-3 SIAC) travels to Tuskegee 1 p.m. Saturday for a SIAC game.
