Football Suffers Setback at Morehouse College, 31-21

Box Score

Atlanta, Ga.—Kentucky State University dropped its first SIAC game of the season on the road to Morehouse College 31-21, on Saturday afternoon at B.T. Harvey Stadium.

The Thorobreds (2-3, 1-1) sit in the same position as they did a year ago in conference play, with a loss to the Maroon Tigers (3-2, 1-0) and a win over Central State University a week ago. MC has won three of its last four games and will take on Tuskegee University on Oct. 7.

Sophomore running back Brett Sylve proved to be the pulse for the offense accounting for 199 all-purpose yards, 80 rushing yards, and two touchdowns. For the third time in five games, the Hammond, Louisiana native ran back a special teams touchdown on a punt return in the second quarter.

Sylve's second touchdown came at the start of the third quarter with KSU trailing 17-14. Junior quarterback Paul Campbell faked out a defender heading towards the far sideline on an option play, flipping the ball to Sylve for a 24-yard run to paydirt, grabbing the first KSU lead of the day at 21-17.

Shortly after the Sylve touchdown run, MC answered with a 78-yard touchdown pass, regaining the lead at 24-21.

The two defenses battled, keeping each offense at bay deep into the fourth quarter. After a strong stand by the KSU defense, MC punted back to Sylve with a little over six minutes to go in the game. Sylve fumbled the punt after a fair catch call, giving the ball to the Maroon Tigers on the KSU 34-yard line.

The Thorobreds' defense continued to hold, but on fourth and eight with the ball at the KSU 32 yard line, quarterback Kivon Taylor went over the top for a touchdown extending the lead to 10 and the eventual win.

Junior linebacker Andre Miles cause problems all afternoon for the Maroon Tigers, picking up 12 tackles, three tackles for a loss, one sack, and one interception.

Senior defensive end Rodriquez Jones aided in the frustration as he added five tackles, one sack, and one fumble recovery.

KSU will return to the Capitol City for Senior Day on Oct. 7 at Alumni Stadium for a non-conference battle with West Virginia State University at 1:30 pm ET.
