Frankfort, Ky. – Kentucky State University earned its tenth win in eleven games, defeating Tuskegee University 14-4 in SIAC West Division action on Sunday afternoon.
The Thorobrettes struck early in the bottom of the first, with runners on second and third senior third baseman
Katelyn Drake ground into a fielder's choice to drive in junior second baseman
Brittney Gately to give the home squad a 1-0 advantage. During the next at-bat, senior first baseman
Kaitlin Oshiro drilled a double into centerfield to score Drake and extend the lead to 2-0.
KSU (12-18, 8-5 SIAC) added another run to its lead in the bottom of the second, as senior outfielder
Tyniesha Wilson hit a sacrifice fly to right field with senior catcher
Emily Ross on third to bring the runner home and make the score 3-0. Later in the inning, junior outfielder
Alysha Sakamura singled and junior second baseman walked to put runners on first and second before sophomore
Jittaun Thompson crushed a three-run shot over the left field fence, her second of the season, to give the home team a 6-0 advantage.
The Thorobrettes' bats stayed hot in the bottom of the third as junior designated player
Keyana Dunn launched a lead-off home run deep over the left field fence, making the score 7-0. Following back-to-back singles by Ross and freshman outfielder
Natalia Bocanegra, Wilson walked to load the bases for KSU. The Thorobrettes added their eighth run of the game after a wild pitch allowed Ross to slide into home. Later in the inning with the bases still loaded, Thompson cleared the bases with a three-run triple, recording her sixth RBI of the game, before advancing to third on an errant throw home to make the score 11-0. Later in the inning, Oshiro's fly ball to center field was dropped, driving in Thompson and capping off a six-run inning for KSU.
The Golden Tigers clawed their way back into the contest in the top of the fourth, scoring four runs to cut the Thorobrettes' lead to 12-4 until Thompson poked a double over the glove of the TU shortstop with the bases loaded to drive in her eight RBI of the contest and make the score 14-4.
Freshman pitcher
Courtney Payne earned her third win of the season, striking out five in four innings of action for KSU.
With the win, all three Thorobrette freshman pitchers combined for 18 strikeouts and allowed only six earned runs in 14 total innings of action in the three-game sweep of TU.
Thompson went 3-for-4 with eight RBI from the plate while Oshiro went 1-for-3 and added two RBI of her own for the home squad.
KSU will host Bluefield State College for Senior Night in a nonconference doubleheader on Monday, April 17 at 1:00 p.m. ET.
