Frankfort, Ky. – Kentucky State University softball won both games in an SIAC West Division doubleheader against Tuskegee University on Saturday afternoon.

Game 1: KSU 12 TU 3

After falling to an early 2-0 deficit in the first inning, the Thorobrettes' offense caught fire in the bottom of the second. Senior third baseman
Katelyn Drake led off the stanza, reaching first following an error before senior first baseman
Kaitlin Oshiro blasted a single and advanced to second on the throw to drive in Drake and cut the deficit to 2-1. Later in the frame, junior designated player
Keyana Dunn reached on an error that scored Oshiro to tie the game up at two until freshman outfielder
Natalia Bocanegra belted her first career homerun over the centerfield fence to give the home squad a 4-2 lead.

KSU (10-18, 7-5 SIAC) did not trail for the remainder of the contest, outscoring the Golden Tigers 8-1 to pick up its tenth win of the season.

After giving up two runs early in the first inning, freshman pitcher
Chante Thome bounced back by striking out the final two batters to get out of the inning. Thome dominated the rest of the game, striking out three more Golden Tigers while not walking a single batter in the contest to earn her third win of the season.

Bocanegra went 1-for-2 at the plate, walking twice and homering to record three RBIs while junior outfielder
Alysha Sakamura went 1-for-4 with three RBIs of her own for the Thorobrettes.

Game 2: KSU 16 TU 0

KSU (11-18, 8-5 SIAC) took advantage of free bases and Golden Tiger errors in the bottom half of the first, as Sakamura and sophomore outfielder
Jittaun Thompson were both hit by pitches to give the Thorobrettes runners at first and second. After a wild pitch by TU had advanced the runners to second and third, Drake walked to load the bases for the home squad until Oshiro drove in Sakamura and Thompson after reaching on an error by the shortstop to give KSU a 2-0 lead. Later in the frame, Drake scored off another wild pitch to extend the lead to 3-0.

With the home squad leading 11-0 and the bases loaded, Drake crushed a grand slam, her first homerun of the season, in the bottom of the fourth to extend the Thorobrette lead to 15-0.

The victory marks the ninth in ten games for KSU.

Kaija Aikman had a spectacular performance on the mound, striking out eight batters in five shutout innings to pick up her fourth win of the season.
