Frankfort, Ky.—Kentucky State University football will go on the road for the fifth time in six games as they will take on Valdosta State University in Waycross, Ga. on Saturday at 2:00 p.m. ET.
The Thorobreds (1-3) are coming off their first win of the season with a 17-14 overtime victory against SIAC rival Central State University in the Circle City Classic. The Blazers (2-1) forced seven turnovers in a 40-28 victory against the University of West Florida.
The KSU defense has been very stingy over the last three games especially in the second half. Against Morehouse College, Virginia State University, and CSU, the Thorobreds only allowed one second half touchdown in all three games combined. During the recent contest against CSU, the defense only allowed 36 total yards of offense in the second half, setting the stage for a 17-point fourth quarter comeback by the Thorobreds.
"Our defense has been the staple of our football team, especially our defensive line," said head coach
John L. Smith. "All of our guys up front Donovan (Cecil), Nick (Beckhum), Rodriquez (Jones), and Myrthel (Stewart Jr.) are doing a great job. They're all very capable with their athletic ability, and I think coach Smeland is keeping things simple, focusing on technique."
Freshman defensive lineman
Myrthel Stewart Jr. has made an impact with the defense as he leads the team in tackles with 37.5 and two sacks. Senior linebacker and defensive captain
Travon Spencer is continuing the trend he set the previous three years with the program, coming into the matchup with Valdosta second in wrap-ups with 36. Both rank in the top 10 of the SIAC in total tackles with Stewart at fourth and Spencer fifth in the conference. Â
