Box Score FRANKFORT, Ky. – The Kentucky State volleyball team dropped its 2015 home opener, falling 3-0 to visiting Trevecca Nazarene on Tuesday at the Exum Center.
The Thorobrettes led through much of the first set before Trevecca Nazarene pulled ahead late to win 25-19. The Trojans were also able to pull away in the second and third sets, winning 25-18 and 25-15, respectively.
In the first set, Kentucky State jumped out to an early 3-1 lead after kills by
Anjelique Kyle,
Tori Farrow, and
Micah Rogers and held that lead for most of the set. The Thorobrettes were still up at 15-14 when the Trojans took the lead by winning three straight points, then closed out the match by outscoring Kentucky State 7-3 the rest of the way.
Trevecca Nazarene got out to early leads in the following two sets, with the Thorobrettes fighting to catch up. The Trojans jumped out to a 5-2 lead early in the second set and stayed in front throughout. Kentucky State trimmed the deficit to 18-17 on four straight points, including kills by
Tahje Ochs and
Altonia Taylor, but it was as close as they would get. Trevecca Nazarene answered with six straight points to essentially put the game away at 24-17. The Trojans again jumped out to a 5-2 lead in the third set, this time pulling away for a 25-15 win that clinched the match.
Individually, Ochs and
Payton Richardson each had six kills to lead the Thorobrettes, while
Kirtrice Ploucha and Rogers each had five. Richardson also contributed a team-high four blocks, while
Kiara Rivera led the team with 14 digs. Kyle also added 21 assists in the loss. Trevecca Nazarene's Katelyn Atkinson and Stephanie Bouchard each had 10 kills to lead all players.
Kentucky State falls to 6-3 on the season with the loss, while the victory helps Trevecca Nazarene even its record at 6-6 overall. The Thorobrettes now return to Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference play, where they take their 6-0 conference record into the weekend's SIAC East/West Crossover, which will feature six matches over three days in Albany, Ga.
