Box Score LOUISVILLE, Ky. – After six straight wins to open the season, the Kentucky State volleyball team suffered its first loss of the 2015 campaign, falling 3-0 at Bellarmine on Wednesday.
Though Bellarmine came away a 3-0 winner, all three sets were hard-fought by the Thorobrettes. In the opening set, the score remained close before the Knights took six of seven points to pull out to an 18-8 lead. Though Kentucky State battled back to cut the score to 21-16, Bellarmine answered with the last four points to take the set.
The second set played out similarly, with the Knights scoring six straight to take a 14-6 lead. Again, the Thorobrettes came back, pulling to within two at 21-19 after kills by
Kirtrice Ploucha and
Tori Farrow. However, Bellarmine was again able to close out the set with a late run, taking four of the last five points.
The third set was evenly matched throughout, with Kentucky State taking a lead at 13-12 after a kill by
Micah Rogers. The Thorobrettes were close to extending the match with back-to-back points that cut the Bellarmine lead to 23-21, but the Knights were able to get the next two points to close out the match.
Individually, Ploucha finished with a team-high seven kills and three blocks, while
Micah Rogers tallied five kills, two aces, three blocks, and nine digs.
Anjelique Kyle led the team with 22 assists to go with four kills, and
Kiara Rivera picked up a team-high 10 assists.
Payton Richardson also added five kills.
With the loss, Kentucky State falls to 6-1 overall on the season, while Bellarmine improves to 5-3. The Thorobrettes return to action when they travel to Asbury on Saturday, followed by their home opener Tuesday at 7 p.m. at the Exum Center.
