MOBILE, Ala. – The Kentucky State University softball team is still attempting to find a winning formula after struggling in a three-game series against SIAC newcomer Spring Hill College this past weekend. The Thorobrettes dropped a pair of games on Saturday, 8-0, 3-2, and fell in six innings, 9-1, on Sunday at Murray Field.
The losses drop Kentucky State to 0-5 in the early season and 0-3 in SIAC action. Spring Hill improves to 5-2 overall and 3-0 in conference play.
In their opening game, Spring Hill got a no-hitter from SHC starter Caroline Sagrera to earn an 8-0 victory in five innings. KSU couldn't get their bats going as Sagrera picked up 11 strikeouts while allowing just one walk.
Danielle Bonham got the start for Kentucky State, surrendering 11 hits and six earned runs in four innings of work.
In the second contest, the Thorobrettes bounced back from their opening game loss, taking a 2-1 lead into the bottom of the seventh, but were unable to hold on as the Lady Badgers rallied to earn the 3-2 win.
Cheyenne Carpenter got the start for KSU and allowed just five hits and one earned run.
In the final game on Sunday, SHC jumped out to an early 5-0 lead in the two innings on their way to a 9-1 victory. Freshman
Brittney Gately got the start for KSU surrendering 13 hits and five earned runs in 5.2 innings of work. Sagrera once again got the start for Spring Hill. She pitched the first four innings, allowing two hits and two walks, leaving the game with a 5-0 lead to earn the victory. Sarah Bolotte pitched the final two innings to close out the game for SHC.
Kentucky State (0-5) continues its early season road trip with a doubleheader against Barry University on Tuesday, Feb. 17. First pitch in Miami, Florida is set for 3 p.m.
