Box Score 3 MOBILE, Ala. -- The Kentucky State volleyball team won two of three matches at the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference West Division Cluster on Friday, but the Thorobrettes suffered their first conference loss of the season in the process. The Thorobrettes opened with a 3-0 win over LeMoyne-Owen before following with a 3-1 win over Tuskegee and a 3-1 loss to host school Spring Hill.
After rolling to victories in its first 14 conference matches, Kentucky State was knocked off by Spring Hill in Friday's nightcap. Still, the Thorobrettes hold a 14-1 conference record and ranks second only to Spring Hill at 16-1, with each team having a head-to-head win over the other.
In the first match, the Thorobrettes were in control throughout, winning all three sets by the scores of 25-11, 25-21, 25-8.
Kirtrice Ploucha led Kentucky State with 14 kills and a .357 hitting percentage in the match, while
Anjelique Kyle tallied 33 assists.
Tahje Ochs and
Micah Rogers each had eight kills, with
Kiara Rivera contributing 10 digs.
The Thorobrettes found themselves having to come from behind against Tuskegee, but after dropping the first set 25-21, they were able to win the next three by the scores of 25-20, 25-19, and 25-16.
Payton Richardson had a team-high 13 kills with a .500 hitting percentage while also tallying four blocks. Ochs again was a major contributor on the offensive end with 10 kills, while Kyle had 41 assists. Rivera again led the team in digs with 14.
In the third match of the day, Kentucky State faced a Spring Hill team that had won 14 straight conference matches since falling to the Thorobrettes on Sept. 11. Kentucky State again fell behind early, dropping the first two sets 25-19 and 25-20. The Thorobrettes fought back in the third set, taking the lead with four straight kills by Ochs to go up 18-16 and holding on the rest of the way. Kentucky State was in position to send the match to a decisive fifth set with a 22-17 lead in the fourth, but Spring Hill finished on an 8-1 run to close out the match.
Individually, Ploucha and Ochs again had big games against Spring Hill, with 16 and 14 kills, respectively. Kyle had 47 assists, while Rivera led all players with 22 digs.
The SIAC West Division Cluster continues on Saturday with the Thorobrettes taking on Lane, Stillman, and Miles.Â
