Stillman Outlasts Kentucky State, 34-20

Box Score FRANKFORT, Ky. – In their first SIAC matchup of the 2014 season, Kentucky State was held to just 102 rushing yards in a 34-20 loss to Stillman College on Saturday afternoon at Stillman Stadium.

The Thorobreds, who entered Saturday's game with the third best rushing attack in the conference, were unable to establish their running game, averaging just 3.4 yards per rush, before being forced to rely heavily on their passing attack when Stillman built up its lead.

After neither team put up points in the first quarter, the teams went back-and-forth with scoring drives on the first five possessions of the second quarter.

Stillman (2-2, 1-0 SIAC) got on the scoreboard first with a 9-yard touchdown connection between SC quarterback Josh Straughan and Dondre Purnell. On the very next possession, Kentucky State (1-3, 0-1 SIAC) put together a solid drive of its own to set up a 35-yard field goal from Cade Berryman.

A 10-yard rushing touchdown from Stillman's Jovontae Thurmon was followed by another field goal from Berryman, this time from 27 yards out.

With a 13-6 lead, Stillman once again put together a touchdown drive, with Straughan connecting with Devonta Gilmore for a 3-yard touchdown pass to put the Tigers ahead 20-6 heading into halftime.

A sloppy third quarter from both teams kept the score knotted at 20-6 heading into the fourth and final quarter.

Stillman began the fourth quarter with a 9-yard rushing touchdown from Thurmon to push its lead to 27-6. After an interception from Kentucky State's Adam Robinson, one of two in the game, the Tigers took over once again, this time on Kentucky State's 37-yard line.

On the very next play, Thurmon broke loose for a 37-yard touchdown, his third of the day, to extend Stillman's lead to 34-6.

Despite falling behind by what would prove to be an insurmountable lead for the Tigers, Kentucky State would not go out without a fight. The Thorobred offense finally began to click late in the fourth quarter, when the Thorobreds put together back-to-back touchdown drives.

With just over 13 minutes left in the fourth quarter, Kentucky State put together a 15-play, 88-yard drive that was capped off by a 21-yard touchdown pass from Robinson to running back Jacquise Lockett. After forcing a Stillman punt, the Thorobreds put together another long drive. Kentucky State's 14-play, 76-yard drive was capped by another Robinson touchdown pass, this time connecting with Corey Slaughter for an 11-yard touchdown.

Robinson finished with a career-high 56 pass attempts, completing 29 passes for 272 yards and a pair of touchdowns. Lockett had a team-high 78 rushing yards in addition to 51 receiving yards and a touchdown. Sophomore wide receiver Corey Slaughter had a breakout game, finishing with a team-high six receptions for 71 yards and a touchdown.

Linebackers Terry Horton and Lydell Simon led the Thorobreds defensively with 10 tackles each.

Kentucky State will travel to Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis, Ind., next Saturday for the 31st Annual Circle City Classic. The Thorobreds will take on rival Central State with the kickoff scheduled for 3 p.m.
