Kentucky State Hosting SIAC West Division Cluster – Day 1 Recap

FRANKFORT, Ky. –
The Kentucky State University women's volleyball team (2-5, 2-1 SIAC) wrapped up the opening day of the SIAC West Division Cluster on Friday at the Exum Center. The Thorobrette's played a total of three matches, going 2-1 to begin their conference schedule.
 
Day one consisted of ten SIAC matches between the seven member SIAC West Division. SIAC newcomer Spring Hill College (Mobile, Ala.) was the only team to go unscathed on Friday, finishing with a 3-0 record. As a team, Spring Hill had an opening day best .472 attack percentage.
 
Match 1 – Kentucky State defeats Stillman, 3-0 (25-19, 25-12, 25-12)
In their first SIAC action of the 2014 season, the Thorobrette's easily dispatched of the Lady Tigers of Stillman. Kentucky State started the match slow, going back-and-forth with Stillman early in the first set. With a 21-19 lead in the first set, Kentucky State got a pair of service aces from Kirtrice Ploucha and a two emphatic kills from Emily Grieshaber to secure the set. The Thorobrette's cruised through the next two sets to earn their first SIAC victory of the year.
 
Latosha Scott (43) and Grieshaber (42), who finished the opening day of the tournament with the first and second most total kills, both had 14 kills against Stillman. Anjelique Kyle picked up 42 of her day one tournament-high 124 assists against the Lady Tigers.
 
Match 2 – Kentucky State falls to Spring Hill, 3-1 (25-22, 21-25, 25-23, 25-15)
In what might have been the most anticipated match of the day, Spring Hill wore down Kentucky State to earn a decisive conference win. The teams were evenly matched in almost all statistical categories but Spring Hill found a way to pick up key points when they needed them.
 
The Badgers were led offensively by Madison Seuzeneau who picked up a team-high 16 kills. Both teams had three student-athletes finishes with double digit kills in the shootout. SHC freshman setter Marie Rooks distributed the ball very effectively, picking up 53 assists in the match. Rooks finished the opening day with a tournament-high 12.71 assists per set.
 
Match 3 – Kentucky State defeats Miles, 3-0 (25-17, 25-10, 25-13)
In the final match on Friday, Kentucky State overwhelmed the Miles Lady Golden Bears from the start and came away with a routine victory.
 
Kentucky State overpowered Miles, finishing with 41 kills while MC mustered just 12 as a unit. The Thorobrette's finished the match with a team attack percentage of .375 compared to -.069 for Miles.
 
Kentucky State will be back in action tomorrow for the second and final day of the SIAC West Division Cluster. The Thorobrette's will play three more matches beginning with an early 8 a.m. match-up against Tuskegee.
