Box Score 2 FRANKFORT, Ky. – After splitting a doubleheader on Saturday afternoon the Kentucky State University softball team once again split on Sunday afternoon with the Lane College Lady Dragons as the teams wrapped up their four-game weekend series.
The Thorobrettes move to 13-22 overall and 9-10 in SIAC play. Lane goes to 16-10 overall, 12-10 in SIAC play.
GAME 1In the first game on Sunday afternoon, Kentucky State went up early but mustered just four hits over the final six innings, falling to the Lady Dragons, 5-2.
The Thorobrettes stuck first, putting up two runs in the bottom of the first inning. Leadoff hitter
Inez Hudson drew a full count before smashing a double into the leftfield gap. After a
Palaura Parker sacrifice bunt moved Hudson to third base, Hudson scored on a wild pitch to put KSU ahead, 1-0. A few batters later,
Jasmine Villamar ripped a single down the leftfield line that brought home
Kristina Oshiro from second.
After KSU starter
Tayler Vierra pitched a scoreless first four innings, the Lady Dragons used five hits to explode for four runs off relief pitcher
Shannon Byrum (3-6) in the top of the fifth to take a 4-2 lead. Byrum, who finished the game for KSU, was given the loss after giving up seven hits and four earned runs in 3.0 innings on the mound.
Lane tacked on one more run in the top of the seventh on their way to the 5-2 victory.
Diamond Moore led LC offensively, going 3-for-4 from the plate with an RBI.
Lane's Shawnae Campbell earned the victory for the Lady Dragons after pitching a 7.0 inning complete game. Campbell allowed six hits and two earned runs while striking out eight and walking three.
GAME 2 Lane carried over the momentum from the first game, putting up three quick runs in the top of the first inning.
Kentucky State responded with two runs of their own in the bottom of the inning before tacking on one more in the bottom of the second to tie the score at, 3-3.
In the third inning, KSU picked up a run and took a 4-3 lead after a throw by Lane third baseman Sherica Bradford sailed over the first baseman's head allowing
Krystyna Fisher to come home from second.
With two outs in the bottom of the fourth,
Megan Jaramillo hit a single that scored
Palaura Parker to put KSU ahead, 5-3.
The Thorobrettes weren't done yet.
With the bases loaded freshman
Jaida Young smashed a 2-RBI double into the right field gap that scored Jaramillo and Fisher, giving the Thorobrettes a commanding 7-3 lead at the end of the fourth.
KSU came right back in the bottom of the fifth, adding three more runs to push their lead to 10-3.
Danielle Acosta (5-7) threw seven strong innings to earn the victory on the mound. After allowing three runs in the first inning, Acosta allowed just four hits and shutout the Lady Dragons the rest of the way.
Lane starter Brittany McElvain struggled, allowing 14 hits and nine runs as she lasted just 4.0 innings in the second game of the day.
