Seniors Lead the Way as Softball Sweeps Bluefield State on Senior Day

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 FRANKFORT, Ky. – The Kentucky State University softball team sent its nine seniors out with a pair of wins on Thursday afternoon. The team played their final two games of the regular season against the Bluefield State College Lady Blues on, Apr. 17, at the Lakeview Softball Complex.

KSU won the first game decisively, 10-2, before holding on for an, 8-7, victory in the second game of the day.
 
The Thorobrettes end their season with a 16-25 overall record. Bluefield State falls to 7-25 overall.
 
GAME 1
In the opening game of Thursday's doubleheader, the Thorobrettes got outstanding performances from their senior leaders to earn the, 10-2, victory.
 
The senior trio of Megan Jaramillo (2), Myeshia Ellison (1) and Kristina Oshiro (1) hit four home runs between them and combined to go 8-for-10 from the plate with 8 RBI.
 
Senior starting pitcher Tayler Vierra (6-8) earned the victory after 6.0 effective innings. Vierra allowed seven hits but just two runs as she struck out two. Vierra ends her KSU career with a 14-16 overall pitching record.
 
GAME 2
In the second game, Bluefield State jumped on top first, putting up a pair of runs in the top of the first inning.
 
After a scoreless first two innings, the Thorobrettes exploded for eight runs in the third inning to go ahead, 8-2. The inning was capped by a 3-run homerun from senior second baseman Inez Hudson with two outs in the inning.
 
The Lady Blues got one run back in the fourth and then put up four runs in the top of the sixth inning to cut the Thorobrettes lead to, 8-7, but KSU held Bluefield State scoreless in the final inning to hold on for the victory.
 
Danielle Acosta (7-7was credited with the victory after tossing a 7.0 inning complete game. Acosta allowed 12 hits but was able to strike out three Lady Blue batters while the defense made some key plays behind her to hold on to the lead.
 
NEXT UP
Despite the regular season capping victories, the Thorobrettes end the year on the outside looking in on the SIAC Championship Tournament. A format change this season meant that only the top four teams from the East and West SIAC Divisions make the tournament. The losses to Stillman in their final SIAC series eliminated Kentucky State from postseason contention.
