Thorobrettes Begin SIAC Play With Sweep of Fort Valley State

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 Fort Valley, Ga. -- The Kentucky State softball team began their conference schedule with a convincing sweep of SIAC opponent Fort Valley State on Tuesday, Feb. 25th.
 
The Thorobrettes took care of business in game one, defeating the Lady Wildcats, 6-2, to pick up their first win of the season. In the second game of Tuesdays doubleheader KSU continued their momentum defeating FVSU, 15-7, to complete the sweep.
 
Kentucky State moves to 2-9 overall and 2-0 in SIAC play after the pair of wins. The Thorobrettes endured a tough early season schedule but have now gotten off to a great start in conference play.
 
Fort Valley State drops to 0-15 overall and 0-4 in SIAC action. The Lady Wildcats were swept in a doubleheader against Clark Atlanta a few days before hosting KSU.
 
Seniors Inez Hudson and Kenya Wilcots both had solid days for the Thorobrettes offensively. Hudson, the starting second baseman, hit .600 (3-for-5) from the plate and drove in two RBI against FVSU. Wilcots, the Thorobrettes third baseball, showed off her power, hitting two homeruns and going 5-for-10 from the plate in Tuesday's doubleheader. Designated hitter Megan Jaramillo went 4-for-9 from the plate including three doubles and four RBI. Starting shortstop Palaura Parker went 3-for-7 from the plate.
 
Tayler Vierra (2-3) picked up both wins after throwing a complete game in game one and 6.2 innings of solid relief in the second game of the doubleheader.
 
In game one, Vierra tossed seven strong innings, allowing just five FVSU hits and two earned runs. She struck out two Lady Wildcat hitters and walked three. In the second game of the day, freshman Shannon Byrum got the nod as the starter but was pulled after allowing four hits and three earned runs with just one out in the bottom of the first. Vierra entered the game and threw the final 6.2 innings, giving up 10 hits and four runs, but earning the victory after getting plenty of offensive help from the KSU hitters.
 
Kentucky State will look to continue their momentum with a doubleheader against Clark Atlanta on Feb. 26th in Atlanta, Ga.
