Box Score AUGUSTA, GA -- The Kentucky State University Thorobreds picked up a much needed SIAC victory with an 83-61 blowout of the Paine College Lions on Monday evening.
The victory pushes the Thorobreds overall record to 3-8 and 2-4 in SIAC action. The win keeps Kentucky State in the top half of the SIAC West Division standings and within striking distance of Tuskegee who sits atop the West Division standings and will be in Frankfort on Saturday afternoon.
Kentucky State put together the type of game they've been striving for all season. The Thorobreds shot 54.7% (29-of-53) from the floor as a team including 50% (7-of-14) from beyond the arc. Kentucky State also connected on 82% (18-of-22) of their attempts from the free throw line, easily their best performance from the charity stripe this season.
The Thorobreds also limited their turnovers against Paine to just nine, the first time they've stayed under double digit turnovers this season. On the defensive end, KSU forced Paine into 13 turnovers and tallied seven steals as a unit.
KSU seniors Darquell Pulliam and Antonio Sullivan both had standout games for the Thorobreds. Pulliam finished with a game-high 19 points, going 8-for-11 from the floor, while also adding four steals. Sullivan had a season high 18 points, shooting an impressive 4-for-6 from 3-point range and a perfect 4-for-4 from the free throw line.
The Lions were led by Kenny Fluellen who finished the game with a team high 16 points in 34 minutes of action.
Paine led only once in the contest when Fluellen hit a 3-point shot about eight minutes into the first half.
Next up for Kentucky State is a matchup with Morehouse on Jan. 16th. The Thursday evening game is scheduled for a 7:30 p.m. tip-off. The Maroon Tigers enter the contest with a 5-8 overall record and 2-3 record in SIAC action.
