Box Score Columbia, S.C. -- The Kentucky State University Thorobreds fell in overtime to the Benedict College Tigers, 78-73, on Saturday afternoon at the Benjamin E. Mays HRC Arena.
Kentucky State's Ulysses Thomas III had what would have been a go-ahead basket blocked by Benedict's Jose Roman-Angueira as time expired to send the game into overtime.
In the extra session, Benedict (10-3, 5-0 SIAC) came out strong, scoring the first seven points on their way to the victory over the Thorobreds (2-8, 1-4 SIAC).
Kentucky State had a chance at the end of overtime. Junior guard Darquell Pulliam hit a clutch 3-point shot with just 13 seconds left to pull the Thorobreds to within three at 76-73. On the ensuing play Benedicts Andrew Crawford turned the ball over giving Pulliam another chance at a 3-point shot that would have tied the game.
Unfortunately Pulliam's shot was off and the Thorobreds were forced to foul.
The Tigers Brennan Reynard hit a pair of free throws to push Benedicts lead back to five and effectively seal the game's outcome with just a few seconds left in the contest.
The Thorobreds free-throw shooting woes came back to haunt them as they connected on just 1-of-6 attempts from the charity stripe. In contrast, Benedict converted 7-of-8 free throws in the overtime period.
After scoring just two points in the first half, Benedicts Crawford scored 22 of his game-high 24 points in the second half and overtime.
Kentucky State was led by Brandon Darrett who scored a team-high 20 points while also contributing with 13 rebounds. Pulliam added 11 points.
The Thorobreds will look to get back on track this Monday against the Paine College Lions. The Lions are 7-6 overall this season and 3-1 in SIAC play. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. in Augusta, G.A.
