HAMPTON, Ga. – The Kentucky State University softball team defeated Paine College, 17-4, in their first game of the SIAC Softball Championship Tournament.
The tournament is being held at the Gerald Mathews Sports Complex in Hampton, GA, just outside of Atlanta, GA.
Paine College was in control early, picking up runs in the first two innings. The Lady Tigers held a 2-0 lead after the top of the second inning.
In the bottom of the second inning, Kentucky State put seven runs on the board and never looked back.
KSU junior
Kristina Oshiro accounted for three of the Thorobrette's runs in the bottom of the second inning. With two outs, Oshiro ripped a double down the left field line that scored
Rikki Martinez and
Brittney Flores. On the next play Oshiro stole third base, and then proceeded to score on a throwing error by the Paine pitcher giving KSU a 7-2 lead after the second inning.
The Thorobrette's added 10 runs in the bottom of the third inning to push their lead to 17-2. Two of the KSU runs came from a
Jasmine Villamar 2-RBI ground rule double that scored
Lorena Villamar and Oshiro.
The Lady Lions picked up two runs in the top of the fifth inning when pitcher Christina Florence hit a 2-run homerun over the left field wall.
Kentucky State ended the game on the next play with a routine ground out to shortstop Megan Jarmillo, securing the 17-4 victory for the Thorobrette's.
Flores and Oshiro led the way offensively for the Thorobrettes. Both Thorobrettes went 2-for-3 from the plate, with three RBI and two runs scored.
Tayler Vierra picked up the victory for Kentucky State after pitching all five innings. Vierra allowed eight hits and just four earned runs.
