Kentucky State Drops Two at SIAC Tournament

JASPER, Ala. - The Kentucky State softball team dropped both of its game on day two of the SIAC Crossover Tournament.

In their first game of the day, the KSU Thorobrettes (5-17,1-6 SIAC) fell to Fort Valley State (3-22, 2-3 SIAC) in six innings, 12-4.

KSU got on the scoreboard first, picking up two runs in the first inning when Lorena Villamar hit a 2-RBI single up the middle that plated Rikki Martinez and Brittney Flores. Unfortunately, Kentucky State wasn't able to contain the Lady Falcons offense as FVSU compiled 17 hits and 12 RBI as a team.

Flores had an excellent game for the Thorobrettes, going 3-for-4 from the plate and picking up a RBI.

Danielle Acosta was given the loss after tossing just 1.1 innings, surrendering four hits and five runs.

Kierra Johnson earned the victory for FVSU after pitching all six innings, giving up nine hits but held KSU to four runs.

In game two, Kentucky State (5-18, 1-7 SIAC) played hard but ultimately lost to Claflin University (13-6, 4-2 SIAC) by a score of 12-5.

Kentucky State used the long ball to stay close against Claflin, with three Thorobrettes hitting homeruns in Fridays contest. In the bottom of the second inning, Candace Stallworth hit a towering homerun over the left field wall. Lorena Villamar got a homerun of her own in the bottom of the third when she sent one over the left-center wall. Megan Jaramillo joined the party when she sent the ball over the left field wall to start off the bottom of the sixth inning.

Villamar, pitching in her second game in two days, was saddled with the loss after tossing a seven inning complete game. Villamar struck out six Lady Panther batters, but surrendered 14 hits in the loss.

Kristin Spearmen picked up the victory for Claflin after pitching seven innings, giving up 11 hits and five runs.

Stallworth was having a great game before leaving with an injury in the top of the seventh inning. Stallworth was 3-for-3 from the plate with two runs, a RBI and two stolen bases before leaving the game.

The Thorobrettes are back on the field this Saturday, March 16, for the final day of the SIAC Crossover Tournament. KSU will take on Paine College in its first game of the day and Benedict College in its final game of the tournament.
