JASPER, Ala. - In their first game of the SIAC Crossover Tournament the Kentucky State softball team defeated Clark Atlanta, 11-9. In their second game, KSU fell to a strong Albany State team, 10-2.
The victory over Clark Atlanta (8-11, 3-7 SIAC) gives the the Kentucky State Thorobrettes (5-15, 1-4 SIAC) their first SIAC victory of the season. In a game that saw five lead changes, KSU showed an ability to play well under pressure.
Tayler Vierra (2-3) was credited with the victory for the Thorobrettes after entering the game in the third inning and pitching 5.0 innings. The Lady Panthers hit effectively against Vierra, compiling 11 hits and six runs, but in the final two innings Vierra allowed just two hits while picking up two of her four total strikeouts.
Barbara Goodwin (5-8) pitched a seven inning complete game but was saddled with the loss after giving up 12 hits and 11 runs, nine of which were earned.
The Thorobrettes were led offensively by
Jasmine Anderson who went 3-for-5 from the plate, scoring three runs and driving in an RBI against Clark Atlanta. Center fielder
Brittney Flores also had a solid all-around game going 2-for-4 at the plate, with two RBI and a run.
In their second game of the tournament, KSU (5-16, 1-5 SIAC) fell short against an Albany State University (10-12, 5-1) squad on top of the SIAC West standings. With Albany State holding an eight run lead after five innings the game was called.
Lorena Villamar (2-2) pitched all five innings for the Thorobrettes but struggled, giving up 13 hits and nine earned runs against the Lady Rams.
Alexa Lopez earned the victory after striking out six KSU batters and giving up just two runs, one earned.
In just five innings the Kentucky State batters were able to get seven hits off of Lopez but missed opportunities, leaving six runners on base over the course of the game.
Third baseman
Rikki Martinez was a bright spot for the Thorobrettes, going 2-for-3 from the plate while driving in one of Kentucky States two runs.
Kentucky State is back on the field tomorrow morning for a game against Fort Valley State University at Memorial Park in Jasper, Alabama. Later in the day, KSU will face-off against Claflin University on day two of the SIAC Crossover Tournament.
