ATLANTA, Ga. – The Kentucky State Thorobred's outlasted the Fort Valley State University Wildcats, 60-57, on Tuesday afternoon. The SIAC basketball tournament first round match-up was played at the Forbes Arena on the campus of Morehouse College.
The victory comes in the Thorobred's first game of the SIAC basketball tournament. The teams were seeded according to their finish in the SIAC west and east division. KSU is the three seed out of the west division, while FVSU was the six seed out of the east division.
The conference tournament victory moves KSU to 15-11 overall and 12-6 in SIAC action.
The loss brings the FVSU season to a close as they finish 8-18 overall and 5-14 in SIAC play.
Kentucky State was able to fight through a poor team shooting performance and find other ways to secure the victory over Fort Valley State.
As a team, the Thorobred's shot just over 33 percent from the floor, going 21-of-63 for the game. Both teams struggled from long range throughout the contest. FVSU shot 20 percent (5-of-25) from beyond the arc, while KSU shot just 19 percent (4-of-21) from three-point range.
A bright spot for the Thorobred's was their effort on the boards. KSU finished the game with a 42-37 rebounding advantage over FVSU. Maybe more important for the Thorobred's was their ability to crash the glass on the offensive end. At the end of the game Kentucky State held a distinct 12-4 advantage in the offensive rebounding category.

Davin Anderson paced the Thorobred's with a team high 13 points also finishing with six rebounds, five assists and three steals. Guard

Brandon Darrett both finished the contest with nine points and 10 rebounds. Senior
Patrick Dawson, who fouled out with just about half a minute remaining in the game, finished with seven points, four rebounds and three assists.
The Wildcat's were led offensively by all-conference forward Brandon Davey who finished with 13 points and a team high 12 rebounds. Guard Joshuah Davis finished with 12 points, five rebounds and a game high four steals. Guard Desmond Lofland had a solid all-around game with seven points, seven rebounds and seven assists.
Next up for Kentucky State is the quarterfinal round of the SIAC basketball tournament. The Thorobred's will face host team Morehouse College this Thursday, February 28 with tip-off scheduled for 3:15 p.m. The Maroon Tigers are the two seed out of the SIAC east division, while the Thorobred's are the three seed out of the SIAC west division.
