Brettes Continue Winning; Defeat FVSU with Two Outs in Bottom of the Seventh

Box Score HAMPTON, Ga. (April 20, 2012) – In their second game of 2012 SIAC Championship Tournament, the Kentucky State Thorobrettes got a rematch from last year's championship game – Fort Valley State Lady Wildcats.  FVSU defeated Lane College and Albany State in the first and second rounds, while KSU had a first round bye and then defeated Miles College in the second round to get to the rematch.

The game began with FVSU's Tawan Barker reaching on a throwing error by Palaura Parker, followed by a single bunt by Kim Hughes. After Jasmine McQueen tagged out Hughes at second, Jes Buchanan singled up the middle to score Barker. The Brettes held the Lady Wildcats scoreless the remainder of the inning.  The Brettes first inning ended without them scoring.

In the third inning, Fort Valley loaded the bases, but KSU was able to get two outs on a force at home, followed by Lorena Villamar striking out Hughes. With the bases still loaded, Shakoor hit a double up the middle, clearing the bases with two outs and giving the Lady Wildcats a 4-0 lead. Buchanan ended the second inning by striking out swinging.

The Brettes came back with a vengeance, as Villamar reached on a fielding error by second base, then McQueen doubled to right center. With runners at second and third and one out, Cat Pierotti homered to left center, bringing the Brettes within one run (3-4).

After holding the Lady Wildcats scoreless again in the third inning, the Brettes scored four runs on four hits by Parker, Stallworth, McQueen and Pierotti, and they took a 7-4 lead into the fourth inning.

In the top of the fourth inning, FVSU came storming back, scoring six runs on four hits and one error to take a 10-7 lead over the Brettes. In the bottom of the fourth, Brittney Flores reached on a fielding error by the second baseman and then advanced to second on a passed ball. Parker came up to bat and singled up the middle, scoring Flores and then advancing to second on the throw home in attempt to tag out Flores.  Ashley Parmer came in to pitch for FVSU and got the final two outs for the Lady Wildcats.

The Brettes held FVSU scoreless in the fifth and sixth innings and were able to chip away at the lead again in the bottom of the sixth, when Burrell singled to right center, scoring Martinez with two outs.

FVSU was unable to score in the seventh inning and the Brettes were down to their final three outs.  Stallworth was up to bat first and with one swing of the bat, tied the game at 10 on a homer to left center. McQueen and Pierotti popped up and lined out, respectively and tension rose as KSU was faced with a two outs and a tie game. Jasmine Anderson singled through the left side and then advanced on a passed ball, putting her in prime scoring position. Flores came up to bat and on a 1-1 count, singled through the left side, scoring Anderson and giving the Brettes the 11-10 victory.
