Box Score HAMPTON, Ga. (April 19, 2012) – Kentucky State University's Softball team began competition today in the 2012 SIAC Softball Championship Tournament. Led by All-Conference selections
Shenaaz Burrell,
Danielle Garay and
Lorena Villamar, the Brettes embarked on a West Division battle with foe Miles College Lady Bears.
In the first inning, Miles' Terri Roberts singled and then stole second. The next two batters flew out and grounded out, respectively, but the next batter, Amanda Talley singled, scoring Roberts. Brittney Mitchell popped up to give KSU their third out and end the top of the first inning with the Lady Bears ahead 1-0.
The next two and a half innings remained deadlocked at 1-0. In the top of the second inning, Miles would load the bases, but KSU got their second out on a force at home and then Burrell struck out Kayla Cox to end the Lady Bears' second inning.
The Brettes' second inning began with Burrell flying out to center, but Villamar (hit by pitch) and Angelica Galindo (walked) reached base and KSU was in scoring position as senior, catcher Cat Pierotti came to the plate. Pierotti's ball went deep to left center but was caught by the left fielder, ending the Brettes' second inning.
Both teams held the other scoreless in the third inning, but in the fourth, the Lady Bears threatened to score again, as Brianna Barrentine reached on a Palaura Parker throwing error, Roberts doubled and Cox walked, loading the bases again with two outs. Fortunately, for KSU, this had the same ending as before; this time it was Tiffany Roberts who struck out looking.
Parker came up to bat first in the fourth inning for the Brettes and popped up to second base. Next up was Burrell, and with one swing of the bat, she tied the game 1-1 on a homer to deep center field. Villamar flew out to center field and then Candace Stallworth popped up to third base to close the fourth inning.
The Brettes held Miles scoreless again in the fifth, but scored two more runs themselves. Galindo got a leadoff single for KSU.
Jasmine Anderson reached on a throwing error by the pitcher and Galindo advanced to third. Brittney Flores flew out to center, but Rikki Martinez singled, scoring Anderson and Galindo to give the Brettes a 3-1 lead with two outs. Parker ended the inning, grounding out to shortstop.
Miles was held scoreless again in the sixth inning, but the Brettes kept scoring. Burrell reached first on a fielding error by Miles' second baseman and Victoria Robinson came in to pinch run and scored on another single by Galindo. Galindo then scored on single by Pierotti, giving the Brettes a 5-1 lead.
Although KSU did not score again against the Lady Bears, they did not allow another run to cross the plate. The Brettes remain in the winners bracket and move on to play Fort Valley State at 3 p.m. on Friday, April 20. The Brettes are now 27-12 overall. Burrell gets the win as pitcher and improves to 9-6 this year.
