Atlanta, Ga.- Kentucky State University traveled to play Clark Atlanta University in a double header on Feb. 28. The first game began with little action from either team offensively. It was not until the bottom of the third inning that Lady Panthers were able to gain a four run lead on the Brettes (4-0).
In the top of the fourth a wonderful performance by Rikki Martinez got the Brettes their first run of the game. Martinez reached home base after getting a single, stealing two basses and being batted home by Shenazz Burrell. Unfortunately, the Brettes were unable to continue the offensive momentum (4-1).
Neither team scored until the top of the seventh inning when Brittney Flores batted JacQualyn Paysinger in with a double (4-2). After the run was scored Martinez reached on an error, and the inning ended with a ground out to third base. The final score for the first game was 4-2.
In the second game of the double header the Brettes were the first to put a run on the board in the second inning after Burrell hit a double, stole third and stole home (1-0). The Brettes followed up with a strong defense in the bottome of the second only allowing one hit and no runs.
The third inning did not see a run from either team, but the Brettes were able to put up two runs in the fourth. After hitting a single Lorena Villamar scored off a double by Martinez. Then Martinez went on to score off a single by Jasmine McQueen (3-0).
The fourth inning was also scoreless. In the fifth inning the Brettes were able to add to their lead. Flores scored after Galindo was able to reach first on a fielder's choice (4-0). Shortly after Danielle Garay scored off of Villamar's double (5-0). The Lady Panthers continued to struggle offensively in the bottom of the fifth.
The Brettes brought even more offensive damage in the sixth inning. Caitlyn Pierotti singled and made it home after Flores reached first on a fielder's choice (6-0). Palaura Parker was brought home as Garay reached first on an error (7-0). Then, Flores scored after Galindo reached first on an error (8-0). In the bottom of the sixth inning the Brettes continued their defensive dominance going three up three down to win the game with a score of 8-0.
The Brettes improved their record to 1-9 after these two games. The Brettes moved on to play Spelman College on Feb. 29.
