Box Score FRANKFORT, KY (FEBRUARY 23, 2012) – On a night devoted to honor the seniors, The Kentucky State University Thorobreds battled the Clark Atlanta University Panthers. After 40 minutes of play, the Breds defeated the Panthers 70-61.
The Thorobreds started off strong with a quick jumper by sophomore
John Gaston. The Breds momentum quickly wore off as the Panthers defense proved strong as Gaston's bucket was the only field goal for the Breds for five and a half minutes. Junior,
Patrick Dawson sunk a deep three to erase the stall in points on the Breds side. An and-1 play from
Fred Jones Jr. tied the game.
For the remainder of the first half, the game went tit for tat. The lead changed 7 times in the half and the score was tied 6 times. Three pointers from Dawson and
Earl Ruffin Jr. kept the Breds alive in the battle. The Panthers capitalized on the Breds turnovers, scoring off KSU mistakes and second chance points. The Panthers took a three point lead into the locker room at halftime (29-32).
The Breds start the second half with a game-tying three by senior,
William Marsh. With 17:20 left in the game, the Panthers went on a 9-0 run. Marsh ended the Panthers run and gave the Breds momentum to begin a run of their own that took them within one of the visiting team. A three from Marsh and a jumper from Troy Adams gave the Breds the lead with 8:44 left in the game.
After the three minute mark, the Breds took full control of the ball and never gave back up the lead. Another three pointer from
Patrick Dawson got the crowd back into the game. Seniors,
William Marsh and
Austin Rich sunk their free throws and exited the game with a standing ovation from the crowd.
Patrick Dawson was the leading scorer for the Thorobreds with 19 points, 5 rebounds, 2 steals and an assist.
William Marsh had 14 points and 3 assists.
This win puts the Thorobreds 11-14 (11-12 SIAC). The Breds will play their finale game at home against the Morehouse College Maroon Tigers on Saturday, February 25, 2012. Tipoff is at 3 p.m.
