Box Score 2 WOMEN'S RECAP
Frankfort, KY (January 19, 2012) – The Kentucky State University Thorobrettes galloped away with a victory at William Exum Center tonight, defeating the Albany State University Lady Rams 64-44. The Thorobrettes' leading scorer,
Jasmine Davis, put the first 7 points on the board with two fast layups and a deep 3-pointer. Davis' teammates,
Cortney Matthewis and
Shayla Moore shots were falling just right to aid in the Brettes' first half score.
On offense, the Brettes were great but defensively they were on fire. The Brettes' out-rebounded the Lady Rams 28-18 in the first half, with six of those rebounds being offensive. The Brettes' also had four blocks for the first half, with three of them belonging to Freshman
Brielle Newton.
Tiffany Merritt was the Thorobrettes' only scorer for the last three minutes of the first half until Senior Asia Dubose shot a deep three at the buzzer. The score at half time was in favor of Kentucky State, 33-24.
The Thorobrettes opened the second half with possession of the ball. 25 seconds into the second half,
Kristi Malohi gets fouled and goes 1-2 at the line. Moore continued her fiery shooting streak from the first half shooting picture perfect back to back jumpers and an and 1 play. After five minutes of a standstill in points, Newton acted aggressively in the paint getting much wanted rebounds and points in the paint. With 8:40 left in the game, Matthewis steals the ball and assists to Davis for a smooth and unprotected layup.
With four minutes left in the game and the Lady Rams aggressive on defense,
Ashley Thompson-Baker hit a jumper at the buzzer. The Brettes closed out the game with freshman Iman Ronney making a layup and then grabbing a defensive rebound.
Jasmine Davis had a total of 14 points, seven assists and three rebounds.
Shayla Moore added 11 points, six rebounds, two assists and one block.
Tiffany Merritt chipped in 10 points and seven rebounds.
The Thorobrettes are now 6-8 (6-6 SIAC). Next for the Brettes is a home conference matchup against Tuskegee University Lady Tigers on January 24, 2012 at 5:30 p.m.
MEN'S RECAP
Frankfort, Ky. (January 19, 2012) – In front of an enthused crowd, the Kentucky State University Thorobreds fell to the Albany State University Golden Rams in a home conference matchup 58-65. The Golden Rams put the first points on the board for both teams. With 17:29 left in the first half,
John Gaston gets fouled and goes 1-2 at the line.
For the next five minutes, Freshman
Brandon Darrett is the only scorer for the Breds. In the first half,
Earl Ruffin Jr. started sizzling with 16 points and two steals. With Ruffin's and 1 play the Breds tied the game at 13. Back to back layups from Ruffin forced the Golden Rams to take a timeout. The timeout gave ASU momentum and they were able to move down the court, make crucial baskets and give them the lead. KSU's Ruffin was able to get a jumper off right before the buzzer. After two ties, the Golden Rams go into the locker room with the upper hand with the score 35-37.
In and out baskets for the Golden Rams and defensive rebounds from the Breds, gave the Breds the opportunity to regain the lead of the game. Darrett took this opportunity and ran with it, scoring four key points in the paint. ASU's defense held the Breds to two points for six minutes of game play. KSU said don't count them out and attacked the basket on several plays. Darrett took control of both offense and defense, getting his first double-double of the season.
Brandon Darrett was the leading scorer for tonight's game with 20 points, 16 rebounds, 4 assists and 2 blocks.
Earl Ruffin Jr. had 19 points, 2 rebounds and 2 steals.
This loss makes the Thorobreds 6-7 (6-7 SIAC). Next for the Breds is a home conference matchup against Tuskegee University Golden Tigers on January 24, 2012 at 7:30 p.m.
